SHAME: Nigeria Completely Ridiculed & Disgraced In Egypt
The desperation of Nigerian sports officials in seeking international office made the country a laughing stock in Cairo, Egypt where the General Assembly of the African Taekwondo Union, AFTU, held on September 9.
Former President of Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Dr Jonathan Nnaji sought re-election as Vice President of the continental body but was shocked to learn that his country did not vote for him.
Instead, a letter of proxy was given to an Egyptian and a Ugandan to vote for a candidate of their choice for Nigeria.
“I was shcoked to learn that the
President of Nigerian Taekwondo Federation, George Ashiru, gave an
Egyptian and a Ugadan a proxy letter to vote for Nigeria since he was
not coming to Egypt because of Taekwondo duties in Nigeria”, Nnaji who
was still shocked after getting re-elected said yesterday at the
sportscity, Lagos.
‘’I told Ashiru that I was going for
the election and he wished me well before I left. I was shocked when
other officials asked if truly I was a Nigerian when proxy letters from
Nigeria were upheld for them to vote for Nigeria. I thank God that I was
re-elected but the shock still remains because I served as President of
Nigerian Taekwondo Federation for eight years”, Nnaji who was in office
when Chika Chukwumerije won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics
said.
However when contacted, President of
Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, George Ashiru confirmed that Nnaji told
him he was going for election in-formally.
“He told me informally but did not
make it official by writing. He sought financial help from the NSC and
they told him he should route his request through his Federation. He did
not. The DG of NSC, Tunde Elegbeleye is aware of this. I did not go for
the election because of the visit of the Kukkiwon Demonstration team in
Nigeria and the Korean Ambassador Championships which coincided with
the election date”, Ashiru said.
And because of this rat-race,
Ashiru’s ambition to be a member of the African Taekwondo Union hit the
rocks since two members from a region could not be elected in the
executive.
