13 Style Tips for the Slim Girl

chidinma2

Fashion is nothing if not dynamic. Yesterday’s trend can very easily become today’s fashion faux pas while tomorrow’s big trend could be a throwback from yesteryears. In an industry that prides itself on such constant change and dynamism, it’s safe to say that fashion trends change as the seasons do but if there’s anything the fashion savvy lady knows, its that not every trend/style is for her.
In the face of constantly evolving trends then, its important to point out that body type is the ultimate determining factor when deciding on what trend to rock and what trend to pass up on. So,
for slim girls this would include trends revolving around bright colours, fitted silhouettes and a heavy dose of accessories and less of the dark colours, V-necks and vertical stripes.  The key being to accentuate what little curves exist while playing down on less than flattering areas.
That said, what exactly can a slim girl rock and what should she stay nothing less than a 10-metre radius away from? Scroll down to find out.

Embrace…

  • Belts: These are a slim girls best friend. Slim girls need all the curves they can muster and nothing spells curvy better than a cinched in waist. So, what better way to do this than with belts? Invest in slim belts in various colours and also bigger ones and pair with tops or dresses for an even slimmer looking waist and wider looking hips. Also pair slim belts with slightly oversized shirts and leggings/jeggings or skinny jeans for an uber chic look.
  • Accessories: Jewellery, jewellery and more jewellery. Pile on the bangles/bracelets and neck-pieces to create a fuller looking silhouette.
  • Fitted clothes: Ensure that there aren’t any lose areas hanging around in clothes. Hold in every extra inch but this is not to say that the clothes should be overtly tight, rather they should be simply fitted to embrace the natural curves of the body.
  • Peplum dresses/tops: This trend was no doubt created with the slim girl in mind. The fitted top and flared out bottom pattern of peplum outfits make for perfect styling as they provide layers which is key for the slim girl. Trendy and versatile, the peplum makes for the perfect wardrobe staple for the slim girl.
  • Dramatic necklines: Ruffles, bows and a generally busy neckline is great for slim girls as it creates some volume which is key. Scoop/round and square necklines are also great because they create room for a cleavage which also create volume in the upper region. They can also be paired with busy neck-pieces.
  • Bright colours: Bright colours and patterns are another great trend which slim girls can embrace whole heatedly because it makes for a better silhouette  creating the much needed volume which slim girls need.
  • Midis: The midi trend is very in right now and also a great enhancer of curves. Rather than go for a knee-length skirt/dress, go with a midi skirt/dress which creates a curvier silhouette.
  • Empire waist: The empire waist style is cinched in at the waist and then falls gracefully out in a flared form. The cut of the empire waist is great for slim girls because it creates a fuller silhouette.
  • Layering: The key with slim girls is to create volume and every outfit should be worked around this. A great way to bring on the layers is with blazers. Pair a ruffled blouse or plain shirt with blazers and a neck-piece and watch a slim, small frame  come alive!
Avoid…
  •  Very short/cap sleeves: These are not the most flattering things for the slim girl because it makes the arms appear skinnier. Rather normal short sleeves, three-quarter sleeves or long sleeves work best for the slim girl.
  • V-neck: As opposed to scoop and square necklines which create room for a cleavage, v-necklines merely show off the neck bones which more often than not turn out unflattering.
  • Black: Avoid all-black ensembles as much as possible because they mostly drown out an already small frame. The antidote to pulling off an all-black ensemble lies in pairing it with lots of chunky jewellery and bright coloured accessories like shoes and a belt.
  • Baggy clothes: This goes without saying, why drown out an already smallish frame in baggy clothes. Embrace what little curves exist and show them off in fitted clothes.
